“Yui” – Japanese Language & Culture After-School Program at CdA
Program
Explore Japanese language and culture with “yui”, meaning “connect” in Japanese. In this after-school program we will be doing fun-filled activities — creating arts including calligraphy, singing and role-playing, while learning about culture and obtaining communication skills for practical Japanese.
We will be offering 3 different Programs for Session 3 of the 2016/17 School Year: Program 1, 2 and 3. The curriculum for each program is different, but all programs are intended for Grades K-5 and are available to students at all levels, from beginners to native speakers. In later sessions, our program will also be opened up to TK students.
Students can start with Program 1 or Program 2. Program 3 is intended for students who have completed both Program 1 and Program 2. Parents of students, who have completed both Program 1 and Program 2, will receive an invitation to Program 3. If you have not received the invitation yet, please contact us through the contact form at the bottom of this page.
Join us for a new adventure in language and culture!
What Parents are Saying
Here is what parents have to say about “Yui”.
Shiho runs a wonderful language and cultural arts program. My daughter in Kinder took her Japanese 3 class after having taken the two prior classes. She loved creating the beautiful crafts and practiced the language she learned with us. We wish there were a 4 class and highly encourage everyone to take at least one class with Ms. Shiho!School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: Kindergarten
Yui’s Japanese After-School Program is my daughter’s favorite after school activity. Shiho is a wonderful teacher. She has that special magic with children that make them excited to learn all she has to share. Each week Shiho taught them something new about Japanese culture and language in a way that was creative and fun. My daughter would proudly share all that she learned with me, and was always looking forward to next week’s session.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: 1st Grade
Dixie looks forward to every weeks class and projects. She comes home excited to share her stories and projects with her sisters. She naturally absorbs the teachings of the Japanese culture through art and fun activities. We look forward to continuing the session.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: 1st Grade
My daughter looks forward to attending Japanese class with Ms. Shiho. She has incorporated new vocabulary words and has fun making crafts and learning more about the culture. Good blend of fun with learning for an afterschool class.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: Kindergarten
My sons (in 3rd grade and Kindergarten) both absolutely loved Yui’s Japanese Language & Culture After-School Program. Every week, they looked forward to going to class, and every day afterwards, they came home sharing what they learned and made with such enthusiasm – it was wonderful to see. They both liked making ink using the ink stone so much, that we took a trip to the Japanese Market, bought an ink stone for both of them, some more ink and some paper so that they could practice writing their names in Japanese, which they did regularly. The boys also repeatedly told me that they really liked their teacher, Shiho, who “was the nicest person they had ever met.” Cannot say enough good things about the class. We are signing up for a second session!School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: 3rd Grade & Kindergarten
My 5 year old son truly enjoyed “Yui”. Creatively he was introduced to many different veins of Japanese language & culture. He often came home with such beautiful art pieces that I love to display and he loves to “share”. He is very proud to write his name and say a few phrases in Japanese. What was most impressive to me (and I think it shocked him as well) was when we were on vacation and he could recognize some of the Japanese characters in the signs.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
Student Grade: Kindergarten
Our daughter took the introductory course in Japanese. She absolutely loved it! From the calligraphy to the vocabulary to the food and the culture, she was enthralled. She enjoyed it so much we have signed her up for the same class with plans to continue her participation in the continuation class. Well organized, fun, entertaining, and educational. Truly a unique and awesome cultural experience.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
