“Yui” – Japanese Language & Culture After-School Program at CdA
Program
Explore Japanese language and culture with “yui”, meaning “connect” in Japanese. In this after-school program we will be doing fun-filled activities — creating arts including calligraphy, singing and role-playing, while learning about culture and obtaining communication skills for practical Japanese.
We will be offering 4 different courses for Session 4 of the 2018/19 School Year: Bamboo Course, Plum Course, Pine Course and Fuji Course*. The curriculum for each course is different, but all courses are available to TK-5 students at all levels, from beginners to native speakers.
Is your child new to our program? Your child can start with the Bamboo Course, the Plum Course and/or the Pine Course.
* The Fuji Course is intended for students who have completed the Bamboo, Plum and Pine Course. Parents of students, who have completed the Bamboo, Plum and Pine Course, will receive an invitation to the Fuji Course. You can also Email Shiho Yoshida to have the signup code for the Fuji Course sent to you.
Join us for a new adventure in language and culture!
What Parents are Saying
Here is what parents have to say about “Yui”.
Presley absolutely LOVED this program, especially the arts and crafts. As soon as I walked in the door, she would be waiting to show me what she had made that day and tell me what she had learned. Then she was excited about what she would be doing the following week! Shiho is amazing and Presley just loved her. She attended other after school programs and this was definitely her favorite.

Thank you for running such a fun, artistic and interesting class! Our son really looked forward to the Japanese class every week and was excited to show his project to us after school. The class is a great blend of exposure to Japanese culture and language, while inspiring artistic creativity. He finished all levels and is already asking if there is another Japanese class he can take this fall.
Highly recommend this well-run class!School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

Shiho’s Japanese after school program was our daughter Lacy’s favorite! From the language and history learned to the most creative and beautiful art projects, we could not have asked for more. Shiho’s genuine care and attention to this class and our daughter made us send her to every session, THANK YOU Shiho, Lacy’s first international destination on her wishlist is now Japan and we will take her 🙂

I cannot speak highly enough of this brilliant after-school program, and Shiho, the kindest and most patient of teachers of Japanese culture. My son was completely committed by the end of the very first afternoon. He looked forward to it every week, we went straight through the four programs and now we are genuinely distraught there isn’t a 5th program for us to sign up for. Every week the children created the most beautiful Japanese objects – parasols, sushi platters, bonsai trees, traditional dolls; they had tea ceremonies, learned some Japanese phrases, and learned about the culture (“Mummy, the Japanese seek perfection in simplicity”!). Arigato, Miss Shiho, and sayonara.

Shiho runs a wonderful language and cultural arts program. My daughter in Kinder took her Japanese 3 class after having taken the two prior classes. She loved creating the beautiful crafts and practiced the language she learned with us. We wish there were a 4 class and highly encourage everyone to take at least one class with Ms. Shiho!School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

Yui’s Japanese After-School Program is my daughter’s favorite after school activity. Shiho is a wonderful teacher. She has that special magic with children that make them excited to learn all she has to share. Each week Shiho taught them something new about Japanese culture and language in a way that was creative and fun. My daughter would proudly share all that she learned with me, and was always looking forward to next week’s session.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

Dixie looks forward to every weeks class and projects. She comes home excited to share her stories and projects with her sisters. She naturally absorbs the teachings of the Japanese culture through art and fun activities. We look forward to continuing the session.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

My daughter looks forward to attending Japanese class with Ms. Shiho. She has incorporated new vocabulary words and has fun making crafts and learning more about the culture. Good blend of fun with learning for an afterschool class.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

My sons (in 3rd grade and Kindergarten) both absolutely loved Yui’s Japanese Language & Culture After-School Program. Every week, they looked forward to going to class, and every day afterwards, they came home sharing what they learned and made with such enthusiasm – it was wonderful to see. They both liked making ink using the ink stone so much, that we took a trip to the Japanese Market, bought an ink stone for both of them, some more ink and some paper so that they could practice writing their names in Japanese, which they did regularly. The boys also repeatedly told me that they really liked their teacher, Shiho, who “was the nicest person they had ever met.” Cannot say enough good things about the class. We are signing up for a second session!School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

My 5 year old son truly enjoyed “Yui”. Creatively he was introduced to many different veins of Japanese language & culture. He often came home with such beautiful art pieces that I love to display and he loves to “share”. He is very proud to write his name and say a few phrases in Japanese. What was most impressive to me (and I think it shocked him as well) was when we were on vacation and he could recognize some of the Japanese characters in the signs.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)

Our daughter took the introductory course in Japanese. She absolutely loved it! From the calligraphy to the vocabulary to the food and the culture, she was enthralled. She enjoyed it so much we have signed her up for the same class with plans to continue her participation in the continuation class. Well organized, fun, entertaining, and educational. Truly a unique and awesome cultural experience.School: Coeur d’Alene Avenue School (Venice, CA)
